The home port of the clipper Mathilda is the small port of
Battenoord on the Grevelingenmeer. The Grevelingenmeer is the
biggest and cleanest salt water lake in Europe. So a perfect
place for water recreation, like sailing, swimming and diving.
In the like are various small islands with jetties, beaches and
nature reserves (wild horses). An attractive spot for a walk, a
game or a barbecue. Nice places to moor are: Brouwershaven,
Herkingen and Bruinisse. A visit to the bungalow park Port
Zelande with its wave-pool is also possible.
From Battenoord it only takes an hour to lock through the
Bruinisse lock to the Oosterschelde. Sailing on the
Oosterschelde is great, but take care at ebb tide. Wherever you
are, you can always see the Zeelandbrug, one of the longest
bridges in the world. The storm surge barrier is worth paying a
visit. Waterland Neeltje Jans with the Delta Expo exhibition
provides information about the construction of the dam in
various stages. Zierikzee and Goes are pretty old villages with
plenty possibilities for a nice evening out.
From Battenoord it takes one day to reach the Veerse Meer. This
lake is 22 kilometers long and between 150 and 1,500 meters
wide. This makes it a pleasant place to stay. In the like is a
small island with jetties and an nature reserve. Close to the
island are tourist attractions such as Veere and Kamperland.
(These can be reached with the dinghy).
The Westerschelde can be reached in various ways. Through the
Veerse Meer and then the Walcheren Kanaal along Middelburg and
Flushing. The canal through Zuid-Beveland along the places
Wemeldingen and Hansweer. Or via the Oosterschelde at the lock
the Roompot to sea (within the 12 miles zone). Another way is
the Schelde-Rijn connection, but this is very busy shipping
traffic route for merchant shipping. With a bit of luck you will
see seals and porpoises, So a lot of possibilities.
As you see there are plenty of possibilities for a great
holiday. You could also simply enjoy the peace and quiet of
staying on board a ship. Staying overnight at anchor is possible
